U.S. Government and Civics for High School
US Government & Civics is a 15-lesson high school course built for students who are about to graduate and enter the real world — as workers, apprentices, college students, or members of their communities. This workbook takes a practical, no-mythology approach to how American government actually works, what rights students have and how to use them, and what tools are available to make change as a citizen.
The course is organized into five units. Unit 1 covers the structure of government — the three branches, the Constitution, federalism, how laws are made, and how federal agencies operate. Unit 2 focuses on rights — the Bill of Rights in everyday situations, free speech law, your rights with law enforcement, civil rights and equal protection, and citizenship and immigration. Unit 3 addresses voting, elections, political parties, media literacy, and local government. Unit 4 connects government directly to students' financial lives through taxes, the federal budget, and the first paycheck. Unit 5 closes with a capstone on civic agency — the full toolkit for making change in a democracy.
Each lesson includes a core article, structured notes, vocabulary, reflection questions, and what-if scenarios designed to connect the material to students' actual lives after graduation.Aligned to: NCSS Thematic Standards and the C3 Framework
